GOUROCK HIGHLAND GAMES

Welcome to Gourock Highland Games’  website, which was created and developed through funding from EventScotland’s Regional Events Programme in 2009.

The Games are organised by Inverclyde Council's Events Team, supported by other Council Services.

Gourock Highland Games was originally organised by a committee, who were given powers by Gourock Town Council and allocated £500 to organise the first event. In 1996, when the committee folded, Inverclyde Council, recognising the significance of the Games locally, took on board the funding and organisation. You can read more about Games past in the History Section.

Gourock Highland Games has developed a successful programme of traditional events . We have combined this with a more innovative programme of, for example, children’s entertainers, birds of prey displays, wood carving, the spectacular Golden Lions Parachute Display Team, funfairs etc.

The Games have been cancelled only three times since 1956 due to poor weather and ground conditions - the last time being 2009.

We hope you enjoy our website, where you can find out about our history and view some photographs of our past and present.

SUNDAY 9 MAY

Set againt the backdrop of the River Clyde and the Argyll Hills, Gourock Park is the stunning location for the 54th Gourock Highland Games, which take place on Sunday 9th May.

Gourock Pipe Band Championships, which, in 2008 saw 55 entries, will culminate in the March Past, Salute to the Chieftain, and prize giving at approximately 5.30pm.

Heavyweight events include putting the 16lb shot, throwing the 28lb weight for distance, tossing the caber and throwing the Kempock Stone.  There will also be an audience participation event - are you a potential highland games heavyweight contender?

The Games have been home to the prestigious West of Scotland Junior Highland Championship for a number of years, and organiser May Hughes receives over 100 entries each year.

Local budding young athletes compete in several track events, when the primary school athletics get underway at around 2.00pm.

Local sports council, Sport Inverclyde, will host a number of come and try events, whilst children's entertainers, local musicians and performers and market stalls make Gourock Highland Games a great family day out.

Other attractions will be added to the programme, so watch out for more details over the next few months.
